The two men collapsed in the Tawi river in Sidhra area, where the cremation of their uncle was performed on Thursday.

According to a report in The Tribune, the family of the deceased claimed the two died of ‘dehydration’ in the Personal Protective Equipment ((PPE) kit amid the high temperature. The temperature in Jammu was around 42 degrees on Thursday.

However, the doctor said the exact cause of death is not known yet. The two victims aged 35 and 40 collapsed into the river before the cremation took place.

The son of COVID-19 victim also fell unconscious and he was later admitted to a hospital. Meanwhile, the family of the victims has blamed the administration for the tragedy.

The family claimed they had requested the officials to make arrangements for the cremation of COVID victim at Shakti Nagar crematorium which did not happen as the administration failed to identify the place for the funeral.

The resultant delay led to the ‘dehydration’ of the victims in the PPE kit in scorching heat and their subsequent death.

After the incident, the district administration has ordered an inquiry and asked the Additional District Magistrate (law and order) to submit a report by June 22.

“Two persons accompanying the body of the COVID patient became unconscious and subsequently passed away under mysterious circumstances. It is imperative to probe into the circumstances leading to the unfortunate death of two persons by ordering magisterial inquiry,” said Sushma Chauhan, Jammu District Magistrate.

The ADM has also been asked to constitute a board of doctors to perform the postmortem of the two bodies. An order by DM also said that the COVID-19 test of the victims would also be conducted.
